Cold Weather Operation:

When the hydraulic oil is cold, its viscosity is higher, and the solenoid control valve may be a little slower in centering or in shifting to its opposite position. This may cause the Jiffy spindle stroke to be a little longer until the oil comes up to normal operating temperature.

On start-up in cold weather, it is best to allow the hydraulic power supply to run idle for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the oil is slightly warm to the touch. Then, cycle the Jiffy-Tap a few times without a work piece, to be sure the forward and reverse travel is within acceptable limits. After the oil has reached operating temperature, repeatability on tapping depth should be very good.

The practice of running the pump across its relief valve to warm the oil in cold weather is very destructive of the pump because it is running in a cavitated condition during this time. The pump should be idled to warm the oil. If this takes too long, the oil should be warmed with a suitable electric heating element, immersion-type.
